On March 28, Myanmar was struck by a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7, leading to significant destruction and loss of life. In response to Myanmar’s request for humanitarian aid, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) deployed its Operation Lionheart (OLH) contingent to assist in search and rescue operations. The 80-member team, led by Colonel Tay Zhi Wei, departed from Changi Airport on March 29 at approximately 1:20 PM.
This specialized team consists of highly trained personnel, including members of the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART), Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNS), full-time National Servicemen medical doctors, paramedics, hazardous materials specialists, and search specialists with four canines. These professionals are equipped to handle emergency situations in disaster-stricken areas.
Preparation for the mission began early on March 29 at SCDF Headquarters, where team members conducted briefings and gathered essential equipment for the operation. The OLH contingent brought along an array of portable Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) equipment, including cutting, breaking, and lifting tools, as well as life detection devices and fibre-optic scopes. All equipment is battery-operated, allowing for immediate deployment in affected areas without reliance on external power sources.
In addition to the OLH contingent, three SCDF officers were also sent to Myanmar as part of the ASEAN Emergency Response and Assessment Team (ERAT). Under the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre), this team is responsible for conducting rapid assessments and identifying critical resources needed in the disaster zone. Their primary role is to coordinate relief efforts and ensure that assistance is distributed effectively.
Before the team’s departure, Minister of State for Home Affairs and National Development, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, met with the contingent at SCDF Headquarters. He expressed his appreciation for the officers’ dedication and commitment to assisting those affected by the disaster. Families and loved ones of the deployed personnel were also present to see them off.
SCDF acknowledged the support of various organizations that facilitated the deployment. Singapore Airlines played a crucial role in arranging flight logistics on short notice to ensure a swift response to the crisis. Additionally, ST Logistics and SATS Ltd Singapore Hub team provided assistance in transporting the necessary equipment and supplies.
Operation Lionheart is a well-established SCDF initiative that has been deployed in numerous international disaster relief missions. Over the years, the team has responded to earthquakes, tsunamis, and other large-scale emergencies across the world, demonstrating Singapore’s commitment to global humanitarian efforts.
As the OLH contingent arrives in Myanmar, they are expected to commence search and rescue operations immediately, focusing on locating survivors trapped under collapsed structures and providing medical assistance where needed. The earthquake has caused widespread destruction, and international relief efforts are underway to provide aid to those affected.
SCDF’s swift response underscores Singapore’s commitment to assisting neighboring countries in times of crisis. With the expertise of the OLH team and the resources they have brought, the contingent aims to make a significant impact in the ongoing rescue and recovery operations in Myanmar.
